Introduction
Eye-tracking research provides some of the clearest evidence that prior knowledge can increase reading efficiency. Rather than simply making readers “move their eyes faster”, background knowledge changes where attention is directed, how long readers pause on information, and when they decide to reread. These changes are visible in eye-movement records long before they appear in conventional reading tests. Studies consistently show that knowledgeable readers process familiar material differently from novices: they spend less time on predictable information, allocate more attention to conceptually important content, and make more purposeful transitions between related sources of information. For understanding increasing reading speed, eye tracking matters because it reveals the mechanism behind the speed advantage. Faster reading associated with domain knowledge is not merely a matter of quicker eye movements. It reflects more efficient cognitive processing during each fixation and more strategic allocation of attention across a text. What fixation patterns can show
Eye-tracking systems record fixations, saccades, and regressions. A fixation is a brief pause during which information is processed. A saccade is the rapid movement between fixation points. A regression is a backward eye movement to previously read material.
Researchers use these measures because they provide a moment-by-moment record of processing effort. Longer fixations, more fixations, and more regressions generally indicate greater cognitive demand, uncertainty, or integration difficulty. Conversely, shorter and more selective fixation patterns often indicate that readers can process information more efficiently. Classic eye-movement research has shown that reading skill and reading speed are strongly associated with fixation behaviour. Skilled readers tend to make fewer fixations and spend less time on each one while maintaining comprehension. Eye-movement measures can even predict differences in reading comprehension and reading proficiency. The key question for domain knowledge research is whether knowledgeable readers simply process text more quickly or whether they process it differently. Eye-tracking studies increasingly support the second explanation.
How knowledgeable readers allocate attention
One of the most informative studies examined university students reading a lengthy scientific article containing text, diagrams, and statistical representations. Readers were divided into high-prior-knowledge and low-prior-knowledge groups. Eye tracking revealed striking differences in how they distributed attention. Readers with stronger background knowledge:
- Spent more time examining diagrams that carried conceptual meaning.
- Made more transitions between text and diagrams.
- Integrated information across multiple representations more frequently.
- Focused attention on information-rich elements rather than remaining primarily text-driven. [ResearchGate]researchgate.netResearchGate(PDF) Using an eye tracker to examine the effect of prior…15 May 2022 — This study investigated reading comprehension, rea…
By contrast, readers with limited prior knowledge devoted more total fixation time to the text itself and were less likely to use diagrams effectively. Their eye movements suggested a heavier reliance on line-by-line reading and a weaker ability to connect visual and textual information. This finding is important because it challenges a common assumption about reading speed. The knowledgeable readers were not simply skimming. In some locations they actually spent longer examining important material. Their advantage came from directing effort toward information that mattered and reducing effort elsewhere. Strategic slowing as a sign of expertise
Eye-tracking studies often reveal that expert readers slow down selectively. When they encounter a crucial figure, a key argument, or information that must be integrated with existing knowledge, fixation durations can increase rather than decrease. This pattern suggests deliberate allocation of attention rather than automatic acceleration. [ResearchGate]researchgate.netResearchGate(PDF) Using an eye tracker to examine the effect of prior…15 May 2022 — This study investigated reading comprehension, rea…
In other words, efficient readers do not race through every sentence. They spend less time on predictable material and more time on information that advances understanding. Eye tracking makes this selective investment visible.
Why speed gains are more than faster eyes
A common misconception is that reading speed depends primarily on eye mechanics. Eye-tracking evidence suggests that cognitive factors dominate.
The eyes move in short jumps regardless of reading expertise. What differs is the amount of processing required at each stop. When readers possess relevant knowledge, they can often predict relationships, infer missing connections, and recognise familiar concepts rapidly. This reduces the need for repeated inspection of the same material. Research on fixation duration supports this interpretation. Longer fixations are widely regarded as indicators of increased processing demands. When prior knowledge lowers those demands, readers can move forward with fewer interruptions and less rereading. The gain comes from reduced mental effort rather than a fundamentally different eye-movement system. This distinction helps explain why speed-reading techniques often produce limited benefits compared with subject familiarity. Domain knowledge changes the information-processing problem itself, whereas mechanical reading techniques mainly attempt to alter movement patterns.
Regressions and the cost of uncertainty
Backward eye movements provide another useful window into the effects of prior knowledge.
Regressions occur when readers return to earlier text to resolve confusion, verify interpretations, or reconnect ideas. Although regressions can support comprehension, high rates of unnecessary rereading usually signal processing difficulty. Knowledgeable readers often require fewer corrective regressions because they can fit new information into existing mental structures more readily. When regressions do occur, they are more likely to reflect strategic integration rather than simple confusion. This distinction helps explain why readers with strong domain knowledge can maintain both speed and comprehension in technically demanding material. Eye-tracking research on comprehension strategies similarly shows that different readers exhibit distinct patterns of attention allocation. Some readers invest effort in linking ideas across a text, while others move through information more linearly. These patterns are visible in eye movements and correspond to differences in understanding and efficiency. What the evidence means for predicting reading speed
Eye-tracking evidence suggests that domain knowledge improves reading speed because it improves prediction. Readers who already understand a field can anticipate terminology, recognise familiar structures, and identify important information earlier.
The result is a characteristic eye-movement profile:
- Fewer unnecessary fixations.
- More efficient movement through predictable material.
- More targeted attention to conceptually important sections.
- Better integration across text, diagrams, and supporting information.
- Reduced need for corrective rereading. [ResearchGate+2PMC]researchgate.netResearchGate(PDF) Using an eye tracker to examine the effect of prior…15 May 2022 — This study investigated reading comprehension, rea…
This is why reading speed often varies dramatically across subjects. A reader may move slowly through an unfamiliar scientific paper yet read rapidly in a domain where they possess extensive background knowledge. Eye-tracking studies show that these differences are not merely subjective impressions; they are reflected in measurable changes in attention, fixation behaviour, and processing effort.
