There is no universal number.

Use thresholds that vary by text type.

Narrative fiction, news articles, academic papers, and technical manuals impose different demands. Many readers discover that inference thresholds are substantially lower for dense or unfamiliar material.

Retest periodically.

Reading skill can improve. A threshold identified today is not necessarily permanent. As vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension strategies develop, the point of decline may shift upward.

The objective is not to eliminate the threshold. All readers eventually reach a pace where the relationships between ideas become harder to track. The objective is to identify that point accurately and use it as a training boundary.
