Spritz-style reading apps often highlight a single letter within each word, calling it the “Optimal Recognition Point” (ORP). The idea is appealing: if every word is aligned so that the eye lands on the most informative position, recognition should become faster and smoother. There is some scientific basis behind the claim. Reading researchers have long known that certain fixation locations inside words are better than others for rapid recognition. However, the leap from that finding to the broader promise of dramatically improved reading is much less certain. The highlighted letter may reduce a small amount of visual positioning effort, but it does not solve the larger limitations of Rapid Serial Visual Presentation (RSVP), such as the loss of preview, rereading and self-paced control. A genuine effect, but probably a modest one

This distinction matters because a technique can improve word recognition while having little effect on deeper understanding. A reader may feel that text flows more smoothly while still encountering the same bottlenecks in comprehension and memory.
What highlighting can and cannot solve
The highlighted letter addresses one very specific problem: where the eye should land within a word. It does not address several of the biggest challenges created by RSVP reading itself.

What ORP highlighting cannot solve:

This limitation is central to the debate around Spritz-style systems. Even if every word is presented at its ideal recognition point, the reader still receives only a narrow stream of information. The highlighted letter cannot recreate the rich visual context available on a normal page.
A useful analogy is navigation. Better road signs can make driving smoother, but they do not eliminate traffic. ORP may improve one small component of the reading process while leaving the larger constraints unchanged.
Why the feature often feels more impressive than it is
One reason ORP attracts attention is that its effect is highly visible. Users can immediately see the highlighted character and the alignment of successive words. By contrast, many of the benefits of ordinary reading—previewing upcoming text, adjusting pace automatically and making quick regressions—operate largely outside conscious awareness.
This difference can create a mismatch between subjective experience and objective performance. A reader may feel unusually fast because words are arriving rapidly and smoothly. Yet comprehension tests often reveal the familiar trade-off between reading faster and understanding less. The highlighted letter may therefore contribute to a stronger feeling of efficiency than to a large increase in overall reading effectiveness. That does not make the feature useless, but it suggests caution when evaluating marketing claims.
How to judge the feature in real reading
The best way to evaluate ORP highlighting is to separate comfort from comprehension.
If a highlighted recognition point helps you stay focused, reduces visual fatigue or makes short-form reading on a phone easier, it may provide genuine value. For longer or more complex texts, however, ask different questions:
- Do you remember key arguments after reading?
- Can you explain the material later without rereading?
- Do you find yourself frequently rewinding?
- Are difficult sections easier or harder than in conventional reading?
These outcomes matter more than whether the words appeared smooth on screen. A highlighted recognition point can assist word presentation, but it cannot restore the contextual information and flexibility that normal reading provides.
The evidence therefore points to a balanced conclusion. ORP highlighting is grounded in a real principle of visual word recognition and may offer a modest ergonomic benefit.
