Introduction

One of the least visible but most important costs of RSVP (Rapid Serial Visual Presentation) reading systems is the loss of parafoveal preview. In normal reading, skilled readers do not process only the word they are directly looking at. They also extract information from nearby words that lie just outside the centre of vision, allowing the brain to prepare for what comes next. In conventional text, multiple words are visible simultaneously. Even though only one small region is sharply focused, surrounding words remain available for partial processing. RSVP systems remove that visual neighbourhood entirely.

A reader viewing one word at a time has no opportunity to inspect upcoming text. The next word does not exist on the screen until the software decides to reveal it.
