Introduction

One reason one-word-at-a-time reading systems struggle to deliver the gains they promise is that every new word arrives without preparation. In normal reading, readers do not wait until their eyes land on a word to begin processing it. They gather partial information from nearby words in parafoveal vision—the area just outside the centre of gaze—and use that information to give upcoming words a head start. When that preview is available, recognition is faster and fixation times are shorter. When it is removed, each word must be identified more from scratch. Harder words illustration 1 For readers trying to increase reading speed, this matters because speed is not achieved only by moving the eyes efficiently. It also depends on reducing the recognition work required for each word. Parafoveal preview helps do exactly that. RSVP and other one-word display systems remove this advantage, meaning that every flashed word starts colder than it would in ordinary text. What readers normally glimpse before fixation

During ordinary reading, attention and vision are not confined to a single word. While the eyes are fixated on one word, readers obtain useful information about the next word, including aspects of its length, letter structure and likely identity. This process is known as parafoveal preview. Research using eye-tracking and gaze-contingent displays has repeatedly shown that readers benefit when upcoming words are visible before direct fixation. The key point is that recognition often begins before direct inspection. By the time the eyes land on a word, some of the work may already be underway:

  • The visual system may have identified several letters.
  • The reader may have estimated word length and shape.
  • Context may have narrowed the set of likely candidates.
  • Lexical processing may already have partially activated the word in memory.

As a result, the word does not arrive as entirely new information when it reaches the centre of vision. This head start is not limited to rare laboratory situations. It is a routine part of fluent reading and appears across different languages and writing systems. Studies consistently find that readers spend less time on words that were available for preview than on words whose preview was blocked or degraded. How preview benefit reduces recognition work

The practical effect of preview is that word recognition becomes a continuation rather than a fresh start.

Imagine encountering the word “transportation”. In normal reading, the reader may already have seen part of the word while looking at the previous word. Initial letters, approximate length and contextual expectations may already be active. Direct fixation then confirms and completes recognition rather than initiating it from zero.

Eye-movement studies show this benefit directly. Fixation durations on target words become shorter when readers receive a valid preview beforehand. Meta-analytic and experimental work suggests that preview can save tens of milliseconds on individual words, a seemingly small advantage that accumulates continuously across a page of text. The mechanism resembles a relay race rather than a sequence of isolated sprints. Processing of one word overlaps with preparation for the next. Models of reading such as E-Z Reader propose that attention often shifts toward an upcoming word before the eyes physically move there, allowing lexical processing to begin in advance. [Carolina Digital Repository]cdr.lib.unc.eduCarolina Digital RepositoryNIH Public Access… word recognition strongly influences eye movements… recognition of the word to the rig…

Because of this overlap, fluent reading is highly efficient. Recognition effort is distributed across time rather than concentrated entirely at the moment of fixation. Preview benefit effectively spreads the workload.

Why RSVP removes the head start

In RSVP reading, only one word is visible at any given moment. The next word does not exist visually until the current word disappears and the software presents a replacement.

That design eliminates the possibility of preview. There is no upcoming word to inspect, partially process or anticipate visually. Every new word therefore arrives without the preparatory information that normal readers usually exploit. [PubMed]pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.govModern Speed-Reading Apps Do Not Foster…by D Acklin · 2017 · Cited by 25 — Instead, comprehension was most affected by reading s…

The consequence is subtle but important. Although RSVP removes eye movements between words, it also removes the overlap between current-word processing and next-word preparation. Instead of recognition occurring partly before fixation and partly during fixation, recognition becomes more strictly serial:

  1. One word appears.
  2. The reader processes it.
  3. The word disappears.
  4. The next word appears.
  5. Processing starts again.

The cognitive pipeline becomes less overlapped and more stop-and-start. [Carolina Digital Repository]cdr.lib.unc.eduCarolina Digital RepositoryNIH Public Access… word recognition strongly influences eye movements… recognition of the word to the rig…

A useful analogy is loading web pages. Conventional reading resembles a browser that preloads the next page while the current one is being viewed. RSVP resembles waiting until the current page closes before downloading the next one. Even if the download is fast, the absence of preloading creates extra waiting and effort.

Why the cost grows on difficult words

The loss of preview is not equally damaging for all words.

Common, predictable words can often be recognised quickly even without much advance information. More challenging words benefit more from preview because readers have more uncertainty to resolve. Research shows that parafoveal information can be particularly helpful when words are less predictable or visually demanding. Enhanced preview tends to provide greater assistance precisely where recognition would otherwise be harder. [Enlighten Publications]eprints.gla.ac.ukEnlighten PublicationsParafoveal preview benefits magnifiedby B Yao · 2025 · Cited by 2 — This study investigated the impact of word-init…

This means RSVP removes support at the moment it is most useful. When an unfamiliar term, technical expression or unexpected word appears, the reader receives no visual warning. Recognition begins only after presentation. The word arrives cold, requiring full identification under the time pressure imposed by the display rate.

In ordinary reading, readers can compensate by spending slightly longer on a difficult word while simultaneously gathering information about what follows. In a one-word stream, that compensatory overlap disappears. The hidden trade-off for reading speed

Advocates of one-word displays often focus on the time saved by reducing eye movements. The overlooked trade-off is that eye movements are normally paired with preview-based preparation. Removing one also removes the other.

As a result, the reading system loses a mechanism that helps make each word easier before direct inspection. The gain from fewer eye movements is therefore partly offset by increased recognition work on every incoming word. Research comparing RSVP with conventional text has repeatedly found that eliminating natural reading behaviours does not automatically produce superior reading performance, especially as speeds increase. [PubMed]pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.govModern Speed-Reading Apps Do Not Foster…by D Acklin · 2017 · Cited by 25 — Instead, comprehension was most affected by reading s…

From the perspective of increasing reading speed, parafoveal preview functions as a continuous cognitive discount on word recognition. When that discount disappears, every flashed word demands more processing at the moment it appears. The words may arrive faster, but each one begins with less information and less preparation than it would in normal reading.
