Introduction

Fixed-speed reading systems assume that every word can be processed in roughly the same amount of time. In practice, readers do not work that way. Common, familiar words are often recognised almost instantly, while rare, technical, abstract or unexpected words require additional processing. Eye-tracking research consistently shows that readers spend longer looking at low-frequency and unfamiliar words than at common ones. When a reading system gives every word the same display duration, difficult words can disappear before their meaning has been fully integrated into the sentence. A fixed-speed display removes this flexibility. Every word receives the same allocation of screen time regardless of how demanding it is.

Consider two words presented for identical durations:

• “and”
• “photosynthesis”

Although both occupy a single word slot, they place very different demands on the reader. The first is among the most familiar words in English. The second requires retrieval of a specific scientific concept and integration into the surrounding sentence.

This matters because comprehension depends on integrating words into larger structures. A difficult word rarely stands alone. Its meaning must be connected to the sentence, paragraph and broader topic. If that integration process is still underway when subsequent words arrive, understanding can lag behind presentation.

The problem resembles trying to listen to a lecturer who never pauses for complicated ideas. Simple points pass comfortably, but specialised concepts accumulate faster than they can be absorbed.

When Vocabulary Slows Comprehension

contains highly familiar words. Most readers can process it rapidly.
