Where Should You Look When Evidence Matters Most?
Readers searching for evidence can often skip large portions of a text and go directly to the most informative sections.

Introduction
When your purpose is to judge evidence rather than absorb a general argument, skimming changes dramatically. Instead of following the text from beginning to end, you look for the places where claims are supported, quantified, sourced, and tested. This shift is one of the fastest ways to increase reading speed without sacrificing judgement, because large portions of explanatory, rhetorical, or narrative material can be bypassed while you focus on the sections most likely to reveal whether a conclusion is trustworthy. Research on skimming and scholarly reading shows that experienced readers often direct attention towards figures, tables, results, and other high-information sections rather than reading every paragraph in sequence. The key question becomes: where is the evidence actually located?
Where Should You Look When Evidence Matters Most?
An evidence-focused skim follows the trail of support rather than the trail of storytelling.
In many articles, reports, and research papers, the conclusion appears near the beginning and the end. Evidence, however, is often concentrated in a much smaller set of locations. If your goal is to decide whether a source deserves deeper reading, these areas usually provide the highest return on attention.
A practical scanning order is:
- Main claim or conclusion.
- Results tables and figures. [x.com]x.comX (formerly Twitter)How to Better Skim Academic Papers…• Figures • Tables • Graphs Figures, tables, and graphs… show the researchers…
- Evidence summaries.
- References and sources.
- Methods or study design if credibility remains uncertain.
This approach allows you to assess support before investing time in every detail. Skilled readers often inspect data displays early because they reveal patterns, magnitudes, and outcomes much faster than narrative explanations. Results Tables and Figures Often Reveal More Than Pages of Text
Tables, charts, graphs, and summary figures are frequently the densest evidence containers in a document.
A well-designed table can show sample sizes, comparisons, effect sizes, trends, and exceptions in seconds. Likewise, a graph may reveal whether an apparent finding is dramatic, modest, inconsistent, or barely visible. This is why many experienced researchers examine figures before reading large sections of prose. When skimming for evidence, look for:
- Numerical comparisons rather than descriptive claims.
- Sample sizes and participant counts.
- Error bars, confidence intervals, or uncertainty measures.
- Patterns that match—or contradict—the author’s conclusions.
- Negative or mixed findings alongside positive ones.
Results sections are particularly valuable because their purpose is to present what was found rather than explain what those findings mean. That separation can help readers distinguish evidence from interpretation. A useful habit is to ask: “If I removed the author’s explanation, what would these numbers or figures still show?”

References Can Be Read as Evidence About the Evidence
Evidence-focused skimming does not stop at the findings themselves. It also examines where those findings came from.
A reference list acts as a credibility signal. Readers do not need to inspect every citation, but a quick scan can reveal important clues:
- Are sources recent or decades old?
- Are they primary studies or repeated citations of reviews and commentaries?
- Do references come from recognised journals, institutions, or organisations?
- Is there a diversity of sources or reliance on a narrow group?
Even a brief inspection can reveal whether an article is grounded in substantial research or largely supported by opinion and repetition.
For non-academic writing, the same principle applies. Look for named sources, linked evidence, original datasets, official reports, and transparent attribution. Unsupported assertions often appear confident on the surface but leave little traceable evidence behind.
Signs of Strong Support Versus Weak Support
Evidence-focused skimming becomes much faster when you learn to recognise common signals of strength and weakness.
Indicators of stronger support
Strong evidence often displays several of these characteristics:
- Findings are linked to identifiable data.
- Methods or study designs are described clearly.
- Sample sizes are visible.
- Limitations are acknowledged.
- Results include uncertainty measures rather than simple certainty claims.
- Negative or non-significant findings are reported alongside positive ones.
- Multiple studies or independent sources point in the same direction. [gradepro.org+2PMC]gradepro.orgGRADE handbookClear, pragmatic interpretation of strong versus weak… Consistent evidence from well designed studies demonstrates fewer…
In systematic reviews, evidence summaries are often presented in structured tables specifically designed to communicate certainty, effect size, and data quantity efficiently. [Cochrane]cochrane.orgChapter 14: CompletingChapter 14: Completing 'Summary of findings' tables and…'Summary of findings' tables present the main findings of a review in…
Indicators of weaker support
Weak support often shows different patterns:
- Conclusions appear without visible data.
- Anecdotes substitute for systematic evidence.
- Sources are vague or absent.
- Only favourable examples are highlighted.
- Sample sizes are omitted.
- Evidence and interpretation are blended together so thoroughly that they are difficult to separate.
- Strong claims rest on a single source or isolated study. [Wiley Authors+2CEBM]authors.wiley.comWiley AuthorsStep by Step Guide to Reviewing a ManuscriptAssess whether the tables, figures, and images effectively support the manuscrip…
These warning signs do not automatically invalidate a claim, but they suggest that deeper scrutiny may be necessary before accepting it.
A Faster Reading Path for Evidence Seekers
Consider two readers examining a twenty-page report.
The first reads sequentially, hoping to reach a reliable judgement by the end. The second begins with the conclusion, jumps to the figures, checks the evidence tables, scans the references, and only then decides whether the full text deserves careful reading.
The second reader may spend only a few minutes reaching a preliminary assessment because attention is concentrated on the highest-information sections. This reflects a broader principle observed in skimming research: readers can improve efficiency by directing attention towards information-rich areas and away from sections that contribute little to their immediate purpose. For increasing reading speed, the important insight is not that every document should be skimmed. It is that when evidence is your goal, the fastest route is rarely through every paragraph. The fastest route is through the places where the support for the claim is most visible.
