Where Should You Look When Evidence Matters Most?
An evidence-focused skim follows the trail of support rather than the trail of storytelling.
In many articles, reports, and research papers, the conclusion appears near the beginning and the end. Evidence, however, is often concentrated in a much smaller set of locations. If your goal is to decide whether a source deserves deeper reading, these areas usually provide the highest return on attention.
A practical scanning order is:

Tables, charts, graphs, and summary figures are frequently the densest evidence containers in a document.
A well-designed table can show sample sizes, comparisons, effect sizes, trends, and exceptions in seconds. Likewise, a graph may reveal whether an apparent finding is dramatic, modest, inconsistent, or barely visible. When skimming for evidence, look for:
- Numerical comparisons rather than descriptive claims.
- Sample sizes and participant counts.
- Error bars, confidence intervals, or uncertainty measures.

References Can Be Read as Evidence About the Evidence
Evidence-focused skimming does not stop at the findings themselves. It also examines where those findings came from.
A reference list acts as a credibility signal. Readers do not need to inspect every citation, but a quick scan can reveal important clues:
- Are sources recent or decades old?
- Are they primary studies or repeated citations of reviews and commentaries?
- Do references come from recognised journals, institutions, or organisations?
- Is there a diversity of sources or reliance on a narrow group?
Even a brief inspection can reveal whether an article is grounded in substantial research or largely supported by opinion and repetition.
For non-academic writing, the same principle applies. Look for named sources, linked evidence, original datasets, official reports, and transparent attribution. Unsupported assertions often appear confident on the surface but leave little traceable evidence behind.

A Faster Reading Path for Evidence Seekers
Consider two readers examining a twenty-page report.
