Introduction

Word-flashing reading apps promise a simple route to faster reading: instead of moving your eyes across lines of text, words appear one at a time in a fixed location on the screen. This technique, known as Rapid Serial Visual Presentation (RSVP), is used by apps such as Spritz, Spreeder, Reedy and similar tools. The appeal is obvious. If eye movements take time, why not remove them and let words stream directly into your attention?

The evidence suggests a more complicated answer. RSVP can help some readers move through short, straightforward material more quickly, particularly on small screens or when distraction is a problem. However, the same feature that makes RSVP feel fast also removes important abilities that skilled readers normally rely on: previewing upcoming words, controlling reading pace naturally, and rereading difficult passages when comprehension falters.
