Introduction

Repeated reading works best when readers do not practise in isolation. Hearing a fluent version of a passage and receiving corrective feedback helps ensure that repetition strengthens accurate reading rather than reinforcing mistakes. The goal is not simply to read the same words again and again. The goal is to compare an initial attempt with a more accurate, expressive version, make corrections, and then reread with those improvements in place.

Models illustration 1 Research reviews consistently find that guided repeated oral reading—where feedback or modelling is provided by a teacher, peer, parent, recording, or technology-supported system—produces stronger improvements in fluency than unguided rereading alone. The benefits extend beyond reading rate to accuracy, word recognition, and often comprehension. What Modelling Adds Before Rereading

A fluent model gives readers a target. Instead of guessing how a passage should sound, they hear accurate word recognition, natural phrasing, appropriate pacing, and expression.

This matters because fluency is more than speed. Skilled readers group words into meaningful phrases, pause at sensible points, and adjust their voice to punctuation and meaning. Struggling readers often focus so heavily on decoding that these features disappear. A fluent model demonstrates what successful reading sounds like before the learner attempts to reproduce it. Consider a sentence such as:

“After the storm ended, the children ran outside to inspect the garden.”

A hesitant reader may pause after nearly every word. A fluent model instead groups the sentence into meaningful chunks. When the learner rereads after hearing that model, they are not only practising words; they are practising rhythm and phrasing.

This process fits with the original rationale for repeated reading. As word recognition becomes more automatic, attention can shift from decoding individual words towards higher-level aspects of reading. Modelling accelerates that shift by showing readers what they are aiming for. Why Feedback Makes Repetition More Effective

Repeated reading can improve performance on a passage simply through familiarity. However, familiarity alone does not guarantee accuracy.

A reader who repeatedly misreads a word may become faster while still being wrong. Feedback interrupts that cycle. When an error is identified and corrected, the next reading becomes an opportunity to strengthen the correct response rather than rehearse the mistake.

The National Reading Panel found that repeated oral reading procedures were most effective when they included guidance and feedback rather than mere repetition. Studies reviewed by the panel showed positive effects on word recognition, fluency, and comprehension when readers received support from teachers, peers, or parents. [NICHD+2Mempowered]nichd.nih.govNICHDNational Reading PanelReports of the Subgroups - FluencyAn extensive review of the literature indicates that classroom practices that encourage repeated oral r…

Feedback is particularly valuable because many reading errors are not obvious to the reader. Common examples include:

  • Substituting a similar-looking word.
  • Ignoring punctuation.
  • Skipping small function words.
  • Reading accurately but with unnatural phrasing.
  • Racing through a passage without attending to meaning.

Without correction, these patterns can become entrenched. With correction, each rereading becomes more productive.

Teacher, Peer, Audio, and Computer Feedback

Different forms of feedback can support repeated reading, and each has strengths. Teacher Modelling and Correction

Teacher-supported repeated reading remains one of the most studied approaches. Teachers can immediately identify errors, demonstrate correct pronunciation, model expression, and direct attention to specific problem areas. Research reviews frequently describe teacher-guided oral reading as an effective way to build fluency. [PMC+2NICHD]pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.govby EA Stevens · 2016 · Cited by 379 — Guided oral repeated reading (RR) with teacher or peer feedback was identified as an effective m…

Teachers can also adjust the level of support. A reader struggling with decoding may receive more direct correction, while a more advanced reader may receive coaching on phrasing and expression.

Peer-Assisted Reading

Peers can provide a fluent model and immediate feedback when properly structured. In paired-reading approaches, one reader may model a passage before the other attempts it, or partners may alternate reading and coaching.

The advantage is practice volume. Readers can receive frequent feedback without requiring constant teacher attention. Research reviews examining guided repeated reading often include successful peer-supported formats among the interventions showing positive effects. Audio-Assisted Reading

Audio-assisted reading combines listening and reading. Learners follow a printed text while hearing a fluent reader, then reread the passage independently.

This approach is especially useful when direct teacher support is limited. Reading specialists note that audio-assisted reading helps readers hear appropriate pacing, expression, and phrasing while supporting word recognition and comprehension. [Reading Rockets]readingrockets.orgReading RocketsAudio-Assisted ReadingWhy use audio-assisted reading? · It helps to build fluency skills including proper phrasing and exp…

A typical sequence is simple:

  1. Listen while following the text.
  2. Read along with the recording.
  3. Read independently.
  4. Repeat the passage.

The model remains available throughout practice rather than only at the beginning.

Computer-Based Feedback

Technology increasingly provides fluency support through speech-recognition systems that analyse oral reading and identify errors. Recent research has shown that automated systems can assess aspects of reading accuracy and fluency with meaningful agreement to human judgements. [arXiv]arxiv.orgarXiv Deep Learning for Assessment of Oral Reading FluencyDeep Learning for Assessment of Oral Reading FluencyMay 29, 2024…Published: May 29, 2024

Computer feedback is not a complete replacement for skilled instruction, particularly when judging expression or comprehension. However, it can provide immediate correction and increase opportunities for guided practice, especially in settings where one-to-one support is scarce.

How Feedback Protects Accuracy

One of the most important functions of feedback is protecting the balance between speed and accuracy.

Readers who focus only on words per minute can develop a misleading sense of progress. Faster reading is valuable only when the words are recognised correctly and the meaning remains intact. Guided repeated reading helps maintain that balance because accuracy errors are noticed and corrected before they become habitual. [Reading Rockets]readingrockets.orgReading RocketsTimed Repeated ReadingsTimed repeated readings are an instructional practice for monitoring students' fluency development…

Research on fluency instruction repeatedly emphasises that reading rate is only one component of fluent reading. Accuracy and expression matter as well. Feedback keeps all three elements connected. [Reading Rockets]readingrockets.orgReading RocketsTimed Repeated ReadingsTimed repeated readings are an instructional practice for monitoring students' fluency development…

A useful way to think about the process is that modelling provides the destination, while feedback keeps the reader on the correct route. Repetition alone can improve familiarity. Repetition combined with accurate models and corrective guidance is more likely to improve the quality of reading itself.

What Good Feedback Sounds Like

Effective feedback during repeated reading is usually brief and specific. [teachingbyscience.com]teachingbyscience.comrepeated readingTeaching By Science20 May 2022 — Repeated Reading specifically, works by having students read the same text, (typically a paragraph or pa…Published: May 2022

Instead of lengthy explanations, the most useful comments often focus on immediate corrections:

  • “Try that word again.” [mempowered.com]mempowered.comResearch from the National Reading PanelA review of the research also found that guided repeated oral reading procedures had a significan…
  • “Notice the full stop here.”
  • “Read those three words together.”
  • “Listen to how this sentence sounds.”
  • “You read that correctly this time.” [readingrockets.org]readingrockets.orgFluencyDeveloping Fluency. This video shows an after-school program called RAVE-O that helps teach reading fluency in Malden, Massachuset…

These small interventions help readers make adjustments while the passage is still fresh in memory.

The strongest repeated-reading sessions therefore combine three elements: a passage that is already largely readable, a fluent model that demonstrates accurate and expressive reading, and feedback that prevents errors from becoming rehearsed habits. When those conditions are present, rereading becomes more than repetition—it becomes guided refinement of fluent reading.
