Claims that people can learn to read entire lines, paragraphs, or even pages in a single glance run into a basic finding from reading research: the human visual system does not work that way. Eye-tracking studies show that readers extract useful information from a limited region around where their eyes are currently fixed. This region, known as the perceptual span, places a practical ceiling on how much text can be processed during each fixation. Why your eyes cannot read whole pages
The idea behind many speed-reading systems is simple: if readers could absorb much more text during each glance, reading speed could increase dramatically without sacrificing understanding. Research on perceptual span suggests that this assumption is wrong.
The perceptual span is the area of text from which readers obtain useful information during a fixation. For skilled readers of English and other alphabetic languages, the span is surprisingly limited. Studies consistently find that readers gain useful information from roughly three to four letters to the left of fixation and about fourteen to fifteen letter spaces to the right. Beyond that region, visual information contributes little to ongoing reading. This does not mean readers are aware of only a handful of letters. The brain combines information across many fixations. However, it does mean that the visual system is not gathering an entire line of text at once. The sharpest vision is concentrated in the fovea, a small central region of the retina. Visual acuity drops rapidly outside that area, making accurate word recognition increasingly difficult in peripheral vision. What readers see during a fixation
Eye-tracking research reveals that reading is not a smooth sweep across text. Instead, the eyes alternate between brief pauses called fixations and rapid jumps called saccades.
During a fixation, readers identify the currently viewed word and gather limited information about upcoming words. Importantly, the information available across the perceptual span is not equally detailed. Readers can recognise words near fixation much more accurately than words farther away. Why saccades shape normal reading speed
If readers cannot process an entire page at once, they must move their eyes repeatedly through the text. These movements are called saccades.
Saccades are not a flaw in reading that can simply be trained away. They are a fundamental adaptation to the structure of the visual system. Because useful visual information comes from a restricted perceptual span, readers need many fixations to complete a page.
